Walking has always been part of our lives. From navigating the market, to late-night “let me clear my head” strolls, we’ve been doing it. But there’s walking… and then there’s power walking and the second one will have your heart pumping, your calories burning, and your confidence strutting in just 20 minutes.
What Makes Power Walking Different?
According to exercise physiologist Alexander Rothstein, CSCS (Women’s Health US), power walking isn’t your casual “phone in hand, mind on WhatsApp” stroll. It’s about moving with purpose, pushing past your comfortable pace until you’re just a step below jogging.
When you do that, a few magical things happen:
Your heart works harder (good for your cardiovascular health)
Your body uses more oxygen, boosting calorie burn
Your muscles, especially your calves, core, and arms get more engagement
Your blood pressure and blood sugar can improve over time
And here’s the best part? You can start feeling benefits in as little as 10 minutes.
How to Know You’re Doing It Right
Think of your effort on a scale of 1–10 (that’s called the Rate of Perceived Exertion or RPE). A leisurely walk might feel like a 3 or 4. A power walk? That’s a solid 7. Your breathing is heavier, your stride is longer, your arms are pumping, and your mind is saying, “Okay girl, we’re in it now.”
Try This Hey Girl 20-Minute Power Walk Routine
Inspired by Laura A. Richardson, PhD (Women’s Health US):
Warm-up – 5 minutes
Start at your natural pace. Roll your shoulders, loosen your arms, and focus on posture.
Power walk – 10 minutes
Walk at your max pace. Keep your core tight, arms swinging, and eyes forward. If possible, change your incline stairs, a slight hill, or even a treadmill tilt.
Cool down – 5 minutes
Slow back down, let your breathing settle, and give your muscles some love with a stretch.
Why African Women Should Own the Power Walk
Walking is free, low-impact, and can be done anywhere. But more than that, power walking is a statement, it says you’re showing up for yourself, no matter how busy life gets. It’s a way to boost your mood, carve out mental space, and strengthen your body without needing a gym or fancy equipment.
You don’t have to wait for a Monday. You don’t need “the perfect outfit.” You just need 20 minutes, your own two feet, and the decision to move with power.
Hey Girl Challenge: This week, swap one social media scroll for a power walk. Track how you feel before and after. You might just fall in love with the glow-up that comes from putting one foot fiercely in front of the other.
