Hey Girl Foundation Ghana began as a conversation between two Ghanaian women, Anastasia Okine and Nana Afia Abrafi Amponsah who were tired of watching girls shrink under the weight of colorism and period shame.
We didn’t start Hey Girl because it was trendy. We started it because we lived it. We grew up in a world where the lighter you were, the more beautiful they said you were. Where young girls were forced to miss school because they didn’t have access to something as basic and natural as sanitary pads. We couldn’t unsee that.
So, we built something that speaks to the heart of it: a foundation that exists to end colorism and menstrual poverty in Ghana, while restoring confidence, dignity, and power to the very girls who are too often overlooked.
We tackle the issues from the inside out, social, structural, and emotion. We use storytelling, workshops, school programs, and media campaigns to disrupt internalized bias and colorist standards. We teach girls (and entire communities) that beauty, intelligence, and power come in every shade of melanin
Ending Menstrual Poverty
We provide free and sustainable menstrual products to schoolgirls and women in underserved communities, while running menstrual health education sessions to break myths, shame, and silence around periods.
Empowering Girls from Within
Through mentorship programs, safe-space dialogues, and self-worth workshops, we help girls unlearn the lies they’ve been told and step into the full power of who they are loudly, confidently, and without apology.
Why It Matters
Colorism and period poverty are quiet thieves. They steal self-esteem, education, dreams, and sometimes futures. At Hey Girl, we believe every girl deserves to be seen, supported, and celebrated regardless of her skin tone or her cycle.
We’re not just handing out pads or hosting conversations we’re building a generation of girls who know they’re enough.
